Today was the last WiX Online Meeting...to be held via Skype, that is. Microsoft is encouraging everyone to switch to Teams so Rob is investigating whether we can use Teams to hold future WiX Online Meetings so everyone can participate, and you can hear Sean and me, and not just Rob.

WiX Online Meeting #171 Highlights
Issue triage
-
Visual Studio 2019 support (v16.1.0), from @davidnmbond, reports that the Visual Studio extension (a.k.a. Votive) doesn’t support the latest minor release of Visual Studio 2019. Unfortunately (or fortunately), we weren’t able to reproduce the problem.
-
Unable to extract engine.exe from 64 bit bootstrapper exe using Insignia v3.11 , from @julieallentimewatch, caused a bit of confusion as today, all Burn bundles are 32-bit. Supporting x64 bundles is already in the queue but not available today.
-
Accessibility: Installer window loses focus to a burn process, from @willcherry61, reports that when Burn launches the elevated process to handle per-machine packages, the interruption in focus causes Windows Narrator to stop reading the UI. We took the issue into WiX v4.x for investigation.
-
VS2019 Installer fails in an offline environment, from @mkvonarx, reports that when not connected to the Internet, you can’t use a downloaded copy of Votive2019.vsix to successfully install Votive. As the ways of VSIXInstaller.exe are both mysterious and capricious, we’re not entirely sure why the self-contained Votive2019.vsix isn’t sufficient. Rob volunteered to try to reproduce the problem in a clean-room offline environment (i.e., unplugging his network cable) and to report the issue to the VSIXInstaller folks but this likely is something we can’t work around.
Votive v1
We’ve gotten a couple of reports of issues with the Votive release candidate (see above) but nothing that would prevent its release. Someone reminded Rob that we’d talked about seeing if we could tag the Votive templates so they show up under “WiX Toolset” in the language drop-down in Visual Studio 2019. Rob agreed it was worth investigating, so there might be another build of the extensions. If so, they’ll be announced on the wix-users mailing list for quick validation before being released next week.
